We understand the importance of regular periodontal appointments to maintain strong, healthy teeth and gums. Dental checkups, cleanings, and other preventive treatments are provided to protect and support your oral health – which also supports and improves your overall heath. Dr. Steve Cobb and our team focus on preventive dentistry for all patients to help establish and maintain optimal oral health. By taking care of your smile now, you can help prevent future issues.

A Visit to Your Preventive Dentist in Odessa

We trust that you are diligent about brushing and flossing your teeth everyday to remove plaque, bacteria, and other debris. However, there is nothing like a professional dental cleaning with one of our skilled dental hygienists to completely clean and refresh your mouth. At your twice yearly dental cleanings and exams, we thoroughly clean and polish your teeth and remove bits of tartar – stubborn yellowish or brownish material that is actually hardened plaque that has accumulated on your teeth or along the gum line. By removing tartar—which can only be done in our office—your chances of developing gum disease are reduced.

A Dental Exam at Your Dentist Office in Odessa

In addition to cleaning your teeth, we will thoroughly check your teeth, gums, and throat at every dental exam. We look for the early signs and symptoms of several oral health concerns, which can be treated much more easily and effectively when found early.

For example, we check each tooth for early signs of decay or a developed cavity. At one checkup each year, we recommend digital x-rays in order for us to see decay that may be starting below the surface or even an infection inside a tooth. Should we find a cavity, Dr. Cobb can restore the tooth with a tooth-colored filling made of composite resin material. This material bonds with the remaining tooth structure, making for an even stronger tooth than was possible with a metal filling.

Additionally, we are on the lookout for periodontal disease. Your gums are an integral part of your smile, your oral health, and your overall health. If we spot the early signs of gum disease—red and irritated gums that may bleed when brushed or flossed—then treatment to reverse these effects can be relatively simple.
