If there’s a cavity in your smile, your dentist can repair it with a tooth-colored filling. Not only is this type of dental restoration highly lifelike, but it is also quite durable and can last for many years. That being said, after a certain point, you will likely need to have it replaced. The question is, when exactly will this be? Here’s what you need to know about the expected lifespan of your tooth-colored filling.

How Long Do Tooth-Colored Fillings Last?

A tooth-colored filling is made from composite resin, which is known for its ability to closely match the appearance of your natural enamel. On average, a filling made from this material typically lasts around 7 to 10 years. The lifespan of your filling will be influenced by a number of factors, not the least of which is the care you give it on a daily basis.

How Can You Tell When It’s Time to Replace a Tooth-Colored Filling?

Obviously, a tooth-colored filling needs to be replaced if it has been noticeably damaged or has fallen out of your mouth entirely. Other signs that a filling has reached the end of its lifespan include:

  • Increased Sensitivity: A worn-down filling can leave your tooth more sensitive to foods that are particularly hot or cold.
  • Discomfort While Chewing: If your filling has been damaged or has shifted out of place, you may notice some level of pain when you bite down on your food.
  • Food Getting Stuck in Your Tooth: As your filling wears down over time, small spaces can appear. Bits of food and harmful bacteria can sometimes become trapped in these spaces.

Your dentist can determine whether it’s truly time to replace your tooth-colored filling by performing a careful examination. They may also take X-rays to see if any decay has occurred as a result of the filling no longer doing its job of stopping bacteria from entering the tooth. If your dentist finds that your filling does need to be replaced, it’s best to have the procedure done as soon as possible.

How Can You Help Your Tooth-Colored Filling Last Longer?

You’ll get more years of use out of your current tooth-colored filling if you’re diligent about taking care of it and the tooth that it’s protecting. Remember to brush the filled tooth along with the rest of your smile at least two times every day. Additionally, take steps to break any bad habits that might wear down your filling faster than normal, such as clenching your teeth.

Of course, not even the most well-cared-for tooth-colored filling can last forever. If you think there’s something wrong with your restoration, schedule an appointment with your dentist right away so that you can get a suitable replacement in a timely manner.
